Elcano orders LNG carriers
Japenese company Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. signed shipbuilding contracts for two LNG carriers in Spain with Mitsubishi Corporation, a subsidiary of MI LNG Company.
The two LNG vessels will be built at Saijo Shipyard in 2017 and delivered to the Spanish shipping company Empresa Naviera Elcano SA for use by Gas Natural, the Spanish gas operator.
This deal will see Empresa Naviera Elcano SA add to its flotilla of 27 carriers. The carriers will ship LNG through the Panama Canal, once expanded.
Based on the Panama Canal expansion and diversified LNG market, the LNG carriers will have a capacity of178 000m3, up from 154 000m3. The vessels will have Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT) MarkIII Flex storage tanks, a reduced boil-off-rate (BOR) from 0.15% to 0.1%, and its reliquefaction system ensures operational flexibility.
In addition to twin-engines, a twin-propeller, twin rudders and the optimized hull shape, the MEGI engine is quipped with an efficient gas supply system, which improves fuel consumption performance by 40% from conventional steam turbine ships.
"Imabari will continue to build high quality and environmental-friendly LNG carriers, which are highly rated by crews and suitable for diversified LNG trades," the company said.
