Crowley boosts container equipment inventory
In response to increased demand from customers, Crowley Maritime Corporation’s liner services group is deploying the arrival of new equipment.
The equipment includes hundreds of chassis, ISO tanks, and high-cube containers, for use in the company’s services between the US, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and Central America.
So far, 534 of 1300 chassis, measuring 40 ft, have been received, with the remaining 766 scheduled to arrive by 1 April. A total of 240 new 20 ft ISO tank containers have also been delivered, replacing 145 units that have served customers for over 30 years.
LNG-powered vessels
Along with the ISO tanks are 145 matching chassis, which will be compatible with the company’s new Commitment (C) Class vessels. These ships will be LNG-powered, combination container and Roll-On/Roll-Off (ConRo) ships, designed for service between the US and Puerto Rico.
The company has also received half of the 2300 40 ft high-cube containers expected to arrive by May 2015.
Crowley’s equipment acquisitions follow the recent announcement that the company would be increasing its capacity and sailing frequency in the US Mainland – Puerto Rico trade in the first quarter. To accommodate growth, the company said it would be adding more than 6000 pieces of new equipment in 2015, which would be comprised of chassis and dry and refrigerated containers.

These high cube containers are ideal – especially in the US to Puerto Rico trade lane – for shippers sending foodstuffs, consumer goods and heavier cargo.”
