HHI develops gas management system

Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd (HHI) has independently developed a gas management system that re-liquefies boil-off gas (BOG) from a membrane LNG containment tank to use as a fuel for LNG carriers.

The newly developed gas treatment system, composed of an ME-GI engine, a BOG high-pressure compressor, a BOG re-liquefaction system, an LNG fuel gas supply system (FGSS) and Hyundai integrated gas supply system (Hi-GAS), can re-liquefy 100% of the BOG and re-store it in the LNG tank. The LNG can later be used as the ship’s fuel. Conventional systems can only partially re-liquefy BOG.

HHI believes that an LNG carrier equipped with this system can save up to 50% of fuel costs compared to a standard vessel using heavy fuel oil (HFO) or marine gas oil (MGO), and produce 92% less SOX, 80% less NOX and 23% less CO2, respectively.

The two 176 000 m3 LNG carriers that HHI is building for Knutsen, Norway, are equipped with this new gas treatment system. The LNGcarriers are scheduled to be delivered in 2016.
