Cochin Shipyard launches new buoy tender vessel

Cochin Shipyard Ltd has launched a buoy tender vessel, which is currently under construction for the Director General of Light Houses and Light Ships.

The vessel has been named Indira Point in honour and memory of 20 personnel from the department who lost their lives during the 2004 tsunami.

Multi-purpose ship

This multi-purpose ship will be used for transportation and placement of buoys in position in deep seas, recovery and maintenance of buoys, towing and mooring of light vessels, distress management, and transportation of equipment and materials in containers, for repair of light houses on remote islands.

The vessel has been constructed using the Rolls-Royce UT 755 S design and will meet the classification requirements of the India Register of Shipping.

LNG vessels

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Vishwapati Trivedi, Secretary for Shipping, Government of India, outlined the challenges to come in the shipbuilding industry, and identified the construction of LNG vessels and dredgers as projects with considerable future potential.

In September 2014, India's shipping ministry approved a US$ 196.5 million investment in Cochin Shipyard in order to set-up a dry dock facility for building LNG carrier ships.
