Port of Gothenburg reports increase in environmentally friendly vessel traffic

In 2016, one in three vessels that called at the report was classified as green. The port rewards these ‘environmental high performers’ by providing a 10% discount on port charges. In 2015, just 41 vessels received the discount, compared to 75 vessels in 2016. The discount is based on the Environmental Ship Index and the Clean Shipping Index.

Edvard Molitor, Environmental Manager at Gothenburg Port Authority, said: “The growing number of vessels classified as green is highly encouraging. They are also vessels that call at the port on a regular basis.”

A further discount is available to vessels that operate on LNG. In total, LNG-fuelled vessels receive a 30% discount each time that they call at the port. In 2016, two such vessels – Ternsund and Fure West (owned by Tärntank Ship Management AB and Furetank AB) – received the maximum discount.

In the statement, the Port of Gothenburg claims that companies were previously required to register their vessels with Port Control at the Port of Gothenburg. However, since 1 January 2017, registration has taken place automatically when vessels call at the port. Vessels running on LNG will still need to report to the Gothenburg Port Authority to secure the discount.
