Keel laying ceremony for ECO tanker
General Dynamics NASSCO hosted the keel laying ceremony for the first ECO tanker currently under construction for SEA-Vista.
The ceremony, which was held at the company’s shipyard in San Diego, US, was honoured by Eric Fabrikant, COO of SEACOR Holdings. Fabrikant authenticated the keel by welding his initials onto a steel plate, which will be permanently fixed to the ship’s keel throughout its time in service.
The ECO tanker is the first of three in a contract between the two companies. The contract scope includes the design and construction of three 50 000 DWT LNG conversion-ready product carriers, each with a capacity of 330 000 bbl and a length of 610 ft.
"This is another great milestone for the SEACOR ships. These Jones Act ECO-class tankers feature state-of-the-art design technologies and achieve world-leading fuel efficiencies," commented Parker Larson, Director of Commercial Programs for General Dynamics NASSCO.
The ships were designed by DSEC, a subsidiary of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME). The design incorporates improved fuel-efficiency concepts, including a G-series MAN ME slow-speed main engine and an optimised hull form. The tankers will also have dual-fuel-capable auxiliary engines and the ability to accommodate future installation of an LNG fuel system.
