GDF Suez charters floating regas unit for deployment in Uruguay
GDF Suez of France has chartered what will be South America’s first floating storage and regasification (FSRU) unit in partnership with Marubeni. The FSRU will be moored 4 km offshore Montevideo at the GNL del Plata facility in Uruguay and will operate as a LNG import terminal. Overall the terminal will be able to receive LNG shipments with capacities of 218 000 m3 and forms part of a wider governmental scheme – Uruguay’s energy policy 2005 - 2030 – to introduce more regasification capacity to the area.
The FSRU will be 345 m long and 55 m wide and will. It will give the GNL del Plata terminal a long-term storage capacity of 263 000 m3 and a regasification capacity of 10 million m3/d.
The FSRU, which has been chartered from an affiliate of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd, is currently under construction at the Daewoo Shipbuilding yard in South Korea. It is expected that the unit will be delivered in late 2016, although to ensure that production will begin by 2015, the GDF Suez Neptune will be deployed.
This comes during a sharp rise in the operating and ordering of LNG FSRUs: at present, 15 FSRUs are in operation worldwide, while 10 are being constructed or on order around the world.
GDF Suez signed a 15-year build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) contract with Gas Sayago SA in October 2013.
At the beginning of February, Japanese company Marubeni became 50% partners in the FSRU as it looks to expand its presence in Uruguay.
