MOL expands containership fleet

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd has signed a deal for the construction of four 20 000 TEU containerships with Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI).

The main engines of these new containerships will be able to use LNG as a fuel in the future. The newbuilding vessels will adopt various energy-saving technologies, which will further reduce fuel consumption and cost.

MOL also concluded a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for long-term chartering of two 20 000 TEU containerships with Shoei Kisen Kaisha Ltd. The two containerships will be built at Imabari Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. The six vessels will be launched and delivered in 2017, and will serve the Asia-Europe service.
