Wheatstone LNG receives environmental approval

Chevron has received environmental approval from the Government of Western Australia, clearing the way for work to start on its huge Wheatstone LNG gas export project once it receives federal approval.

Chevron is seeking approval for a 25 million tpa LNG and domestic gas plant, along with associated offshore infrastructure.

Feed gas for the liquefaction plant will come from the Wheatstone, Iago, Julimar and Brunello gas fields.

The initial phase of the project will include two liquefactions trains with a combined capacity of 8.9 million tpy of LNG as well as a domestic gas plant.

Approval for the development came with 25 conditions, which included protection of marine fauna including whales, dugongs and sea turtles.

WA Environment Minister Bill Marmion said, “"This is a huge development for Western Australia."

He added, “At its peak, the construction workforce for Wheatstone is expected to reach 3,000 people, in addition to a further 3500 indirect jobs and billions of dollars in locally purchased goods and services."

Roy Krzywosinski, managing director of Chevron in Australia, said, "We welcome state government environmental approval for the Wheatstone project and we look forward to a timely environmental approval from the federal government."
