Kuwait and Qatargas sign LNG import deal

LNG Industry,

Kuwait has signed a contract to import LNG from Qatar to help meet its energy demand to the end of 2014, according to state news agency KUNA.

The first shipment of LNG will arrive in Kuwait today under the contract between Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) and Qatargas. No further details regarding the terms of the deal were released.

A lack of domestic supply means that Kuwait needs to import more gas each year to fuel its power plants.

KUNA quoted a KPC official as saying the contract paves the way for greater cooperation between KPC and Qatargas. The official added that major oil producer Kuwait was still considering ways to supply its LNG needs beyond 2019.

Earlier in April, KPC announced that Shell and BP had signed deals to supply Kuwait with LNG over the next five to six years. The combined supply will equate to approximately 2.5 million tpa.
