Vopak ponders Southeast Asian LNG terminal
The Dutch oil and natural gas handler Vopak is weighing up the possibility of building an LNG terminal in Southeast Asia, Reuters reported. In an interview with the news agency, Vopak’s CEO Eelco Hoekstra, said that the company would look to build an LNG terminal in a key trading region and on crucial supply routes.
"If you look at LNG storage, we are interested in locations which have a relatively large and liberal gas market, and shipping routes where we believe LNG is most likely to be traded […] So Southeast Asia is obviously one of the locations that comes to mind” the CEO told Reuters. He said that although feasibility studies were being carried out, there were no concrete plans for an LNG storage facility.
Najib Razak, the Malaysian Prime Minister, said that he would support the move to build an LNG trading terminal.
Asia is currently responsible for approximately 70% of global LNG imports.
