Japan enters into nuclear co-operation agreement with Vietnam

Japan has entered into an agreement with Vietnam to co-operate on nuclear power plant technologies and materials.

"We've reached a substantial agreement... Both sides hope to work together towards a quick signing and conclusion of the deal," Japanese Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara told a news conference.

The deal also includes a framework to prevent Vietnam from supplying Japanese nuclear technology to other countries, and the deal also stipulates that the technology and materials must only be used for peaceful purposes.

Vietnam is planning to build four nuclear power plants by 2020. A Russian state-owned company is building two of them, and Japan, South Korea and France are competing to build the other two.
