World's first LNG tugboat makes maiden voyage
Borgøy, the world’s first escort tugboat to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG), has made its maiden voyage to Norway after its completion of sea trials. Designed by Buksér og Berging AS with help from Marine Design AS, and built at the Sanmar shipyard in Istanbul, Turkey, the tugboat will now begin operations at Statoikl’s Kårstø terminal, Norway.
This represents one of two orders for the DNV classified Buksér og Berging tugboats, which are equipped with two Rolls-Royce Bergen C26:33L6PG engines.
Eco-friendly
The eco-friendly tugboats run entirely on LNG, reduce almost all sulfur emissions, decrease particulate matter by 98%, and reduce CO2 and NOx emissions by 20% and 92% respectively.
Sanmar completed the first of the two power tugs for Buksér og Berging in October.
