Gazprom discusses LNG shipping alliance

Gazprom chairman, Alexey Miller, has met with Sovcomflot director, Sergey Frank, to discuss the possibility of a future liquefied natural gas (LNG) marine shipping alliance.

The two parties met at the Gazprom headquarters, where they addressed the prospects for Sovcomflot to participate in tenders for the charter of ice-breaking LNG carriers to be used by Gazprom.

Alexey Miller and Sergey Frank appreciated the joint efforts made when arranging the shipping of hydrocarbons to Asia-Pacific via the Northern Sea Route. Resources were shipped considerable faster via the Northern Sea Route than by the traditional route across the Suez Canal, making the delivery method more cost-effective. The parties stressed that both companies would continue to cooperate in this area.

Background
In January 2012 Gazprom and Sovcomflot signed an agreement to arrange a test shipment via the Northern Sea Route to deliver Gazprom's hydrocarbons to Asia-Pacific markets.

In September 2012, a Sovcomflot tanker shipped Gazprom petroleum products along a new high-latitude route within the Northern Sea Route, in a record breaking time for 2012 summer navigation of seven days.
