Curtis Island turns on gas
Bechtel has reached a significant milestone at the Santos GLNG Curtis Island plant, with the first of six gas turbine generators (GTGs) becoming operational.
The GTGs will produce power for the site. While they vary in size, each will be able to produce approximately 12 MW of electricity, equivalent to the electricity used to power 11 000 homes.
GTGs will eventually supply electricity for the entire plant, ensuring that the power supply used in the local communities is not affected.

Commenting on the achievement, Alasdair Cathcart, Bechtel’s Global LNG General Manager, said: "Our recent milestones – bringing gas onto site, lighting the flare and firing the first GTG – are key steps to the successful start of LNG production on the project.
“This remarkable progress is the result of hard work from our team and a great level of coordination with our customer, Santos GLNG. 2015 is a critical year for our Curtis Island construction teams implementing an unprecedented program that will have all three plants producing LNG, including the second train on Queensland Curtis LNG."
When complete next year, the Curtis Island plants will produce approximately 25 million tpy of LNG.
