Elba Liquefaction Project files FERC application
The Elba Liquefaction Project, owned by Shell and Kinder Morgan, and made up of the Elba Liquefaction Company and Southern LNG (SLNG) has filed an application with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to convert SLNG’s existing liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification and import facilities into liquefaction and export facilities at Elba Terminal, Georgia, US.
The proposal includes construction and operation of 10 movable modular liquefaction system (MMLS) units, which will be implemented in two phases and contribute to a liquefaction capacity of approximately 2.5 million tpa. SLNG’s five existing storage tanks – rendering the terminal capable of storing 11.5 billion ft3 – and two LNG carriers will not be added to.
The Elba Liquefaction Company and SLNG asked the FERC to approve the proposed conversion of facilities by 1 March 2015.
Shell and Kinder explained that the application was in response to both the abundance of domestic shale reserves following the recent shale gas revolution and rising global demand for natural gas.
