Canada and Japan sign gas cooperation deal

JOGMEC has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), for cooperation on unconventional oil and gas technology.

The agreement was signed by Mr. Hirobumi Kawano, President of JOGMEC and the Honourable Greg Rickford, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources.

Areas of cooperation

The covers the following:

  • Characterisations of unconventional oil and gas reservoirs.
  • Assessment of unconventional oil and gas resources.
  • Evaluation and application of latest technology available that provides solutions associated with exploration and exploitation of unconventional oil and gas resources, such technology includes information technology, nano-technology, and technologies concerning environment, hazards and materials.

Canadian shale gas

JOGMEC has been participating in shale gas projects in Canada and conducting research and development on shale gas exploration and development with Japanese and Canadian companies. Through this cooperation with NRCan, JOGMEC will pursue technological contributions to projects that Japanese companies take part in, as well as to the advancement of unconventional oil/gas development.

Greg Rickford is currently undertaking his first official visit to Japan, where he is reinforcing the economic and natural resources relationships between the two countries.

The visit will provide an opportunity for Rickford to meet with Japanese government counterparts and private companies to discuss ongoing partnerships to enhance jobs and long-term economic growth.

LNG opportunities

Minister Rickford will deliver remarks during the Canada-Japan Chambers Council Conference and LNG Producer Consumer Conference 2014, highlighting actions taken by the Canadian government to support Canada and Japan’s mutually beneficial economic relationship.

Commenting on the importance of the visit, Rickford said: "Our government maintains an open, market-based approach to trade and investment and encourages capital investments that contribute to the long-term prosperity of Canada and Canadians. Increasing trade and enhancing Canada's relationship with Japan will benefit the economies and future prosperity of both countries."
