Tohoku signs LNG deal with Qatargas
Japanese utility Tohoku Electric Power has signed a 15-year contract to buy liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Qatargas 3, commencing in 2016.
Under the new contract, Tohoku will purchase 60 000 – 90 000 tpa of LNG from 2016 to 2018. This will increase to approximately 180 000 tpa from 2019 to 2030, according to a company spokesman.
LNG imports to Japan have rapidly increased since the Fukushima nuclear disaster, and the country is now the world’s top buyer of liquefied natural gas. Japanese utility companies have been looking to boost supplies from North America to diversify supply sources and lower prices.
