Delegates appointed to assess Browse LNG project
Three delegates have been appointed by the government of Western Australia to assess the proposed Browse LNG (liquefied natural gas) project, following the nullifying of an earlier approval of the development by the Supreme Court.
In a statement released earlier this week, Western Australian Environment Minister, Albert Jacob, announced that former deputy secretary of the Commonwealth Department of Environment, Gerard Early, group executive of energy at the CSIRO, Dr. Tom Hatton and newly appointed Environmental Protection Agency member, Grant McLeod, have been appointed to assess the Browse LNG precinct.
‘Impartial report’
“These three delegates had no involvement in the previous Browse assessment and recommendations to government. I am confident the delegates will provide a well-considered and impartial report on the proposal,” Jacob added.
Jacob said he approved the EPA’s formally delegating its powers to assess the proposal under the Environmental Protection Act 1986.
The appointments follow a Supreme Court finding made in August 2013 that invalidated the EPA’s original assessment report and recommendations.
