BC students invited to LNG conference

LNG Industry,

Students from the north of British Columbia have been invited to participate in an interactive career experience at the second annual LNG Conference taking place in Vancouver this May.

Development of the liquefied natural gas sector will create jobs across the province, with considerable demand for skilled labour in the north of BC. Northern school districts are encouraged to bring students to the conference, and the province will provide up to CAN$ 400 per student to support transport costs.

Youth Experience program

The Youth Experience is a half-day program where students will:

  • Learn about LNG and jobs in the industry;
  • Get hands-on experience using heavy equipment and welding simulators;
  • Identify career paths that reflect their skills and interests via a WorkBC program;
  • Interact with BC post-secondary institutions and explore what programs they have to offer related to the LNG industry.

Comments

Commenting on the opportunity, Minister of Education, Peter Fassbender, said: “The future benefits of the LNG industry will impact the entire province and we want to make sure that all Grade 10, 11 and 12 students in BC have a chance to experience this exciting event and possibly map out their future careers.”

Rich Coleman, Minister of Natural Gas Development, added: “Developing a new LNG industry will create exciting job prospects in BC. Our international conference will showcase these opportunities, providing young British Columbians with the insight they need to make informed decisions about their future career prospects.”

Minister of Jobs, Tourism, Skills and Training, Shirley Bond, also commented on the career prospects in the LNG industry: “For northern students, a lot of these LNG jobs will be in their backyards. So we want to make sure we’re connecting them with the training opportunities and information they need to be first in line for rewarding careers in their own communities.”

The conference will take place in Vancouver on 21st – 23rd May 2014.
