QGC funds community projects in Queensland

QGC has provided over AU$ 668,000 to 21 community projects through the latest round of its Sustainable Communities Fund.

Grants from the QGC Sustainable Communities Fund announced this week include AU$ 312,444 to 11 groups in Gladstone and AU$ 355,811 to 10 groups in the Western Downs.

QGC Vice President Sustainability, Brett Smith, explained that grants from the fund were continuing to help improve community facilities across southern Queensland and Gladstone.

"By supporting hard-working community groups, in addition to longer-term projects in health, housing, employment and training, we are helping to maximise the benefits and mitigate the impacts of construction of our Queensland Curtis LNG Project,'' Smith said.

The QGC Sustainable Communities Fund has provided more than AU$ 5.3 million to 166 short-term, one-off projects since it began in 2011.

Ash Chowdhury, lecturer at Central Queensland University's School of Engineering and Technology at Gladstone, said a AU$ 33,547 grant would purchase a wind tunnel for the campus that would allow students to study aerodynamic effects on different objects as part of their mechanical engineering studies.

"Purchasing a wind tunnel for our laboratory means that students based here in Gladstone will no longer have to travel to the CQU campus at Rockhampton to conduct these experiments,'' Chowdhury said.

Tara & District Junior Rugby League President Greg Coase said an AU$ 50,000 grant would fund significant upgrades of the Tara Panthers clubhouse, including new change room and bathroom facilities.

"Upgrading the change rooms and bathrooms would mean the club would again be able to apply to host regional junior rugby league carnivals as we once did in the past. It will also mean the clubhouse will be a suitable venue to host other community functions,'' Coase said.

Community groups can apply for grants from the next funding round from 1 August.
