TFN considering LNG terminal

The Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) has announced that it recently launched a consultation with its members regarding a proposed concept for a LNG export facility on its lands.

Up to 133 ha. of TFN land is currently designated for industrial use, under the First Nation’s approved Land Use Plan. The proposed LNG facility would be built on a 32 ha. site. It would produce 3 – 5 million tpy of LNG.

A statement from TFN said that it is committed to ensuring best practices are used in every aspect of the supply chain for the proposed project.

The natural gas to supply the LNG project would be transported via an extension of an existing pipeline located 10 km from the project. The storage facility would link to a vessel loading facility at Roberts Bank via a new pipeline. TFN said that approximately five to six LNG carriers would visit the LNG facility every month.

TFN said that the LNG project would offer significant and ongoing financial benefits to the First Nation. The proposed LNG project would offer up to 1000 jobs during constuction and 50 to 100 permanent jobs during operation. Approximately 25% of the site would also be developed for community recreation activities. Other opportunities include a natural gas fuelling station for vehicles accessing the port and a natural gas distribution facility for TFN members.

The proposed LNG project will be put to a TFN member vote on 16 December 2015.
