First gas introduced to Santos GLNG LNG plant

Santos GLNG has announced that it has introduced natural gas into its LNG plant on Curtis Island, Queensland, Australia. 

The gas will fire the first gas turbine generator to be used for high voltage power generation.

Santos Vice President Downstream GLNG, Rod Duke, said: “We’ve completed almost all of the construction required for initial production, and LNG plant commissioning is progressing strongly.”

A number of the LNG plant’s subsystems have been commissioned, including emergency electric power generation, power distribution and switchboards, instrument air, nitrogen, diesel supply, water systems, inlet gas separation and filtration, and the main flare. Santos GLNG said in a statement that commissioning will continue as the LNG project approaches first LNG in the second half of this year.

Santos GLNG made good progress in 2014, including drilling 119 wells and achieving better than expected gas flow rates. It also completed building all major gas field processing facilities and its 420 km pipeline, including a 4.3 km undersea pipeline tunnel. Santos GLNG also installed the last of the 111 modules that make up its two LNG processing trains, hydrotested both of its LNG storage tanks, built its 400 m long LNG loading jetty, and conducted more than 1700 community and landholder meetings.

Mr Duke said that Santos GLNG is over 90% completed and added: “We will deliver LNG safely and reliably to our customers. We will deliver value to our shareholders over the long-term. And we will deliver billions in taxes and royalties to Australia and Queensland over many years.”

Santos GLNG is a pioneering joint venture between Santos, Petronas, Total and Kogas to supply LNG to global markets.
