A Passive Approach to Pool Fire Suppression & Cryogenic Liquid Spill Protection

This webinar will discuss considerations and priorities during cryogenic liquid spills at LNG facilities – including thermal shock to concrete and steel, vaporisation of liquid hydrocarbons, and radiant heat during potential fires. Two FOAMGLAS® cellular glass insulation systems are designed for this scenario – the FOAMGLAS® PFSTM (Pool Fire Suppressant) System Generation 2 and Cryo SpillTM System.

LNG facilities face severe risks from accidental cryogenic spills and hydrocarbon pool fires that can damage equipment and heighten fire hazards. LNG impoundment basins are a safety measure that strategically divert potential spills away from critical process equipment, minimising fire risks and pool vaporisation. During a spill, ambient heat from basin walls, ground, wind, and solar radiation accelerates LNG vaporisation. If ignited, pool fires radiate extreme heat, potentially triggering a self-sustaining reaction that increases vaporisation rates and threatens nearby infrastructure.

Owens Corning’s FOAMGLAS® PFSTM (Pool Fire Suppressant) System Generation 2 is a patented solution using buoyant, non-flammable cellular glass blocks with a reflective stainless steel finish. During an LNG spill, the system floats, forming a barrier that shields the LNG from solar and environmental heat, reducing vaporisation. If ignition occurs, the system limits flame height and heat flux, protecting adjacent equipment.

Owens Corning’s Cryo SpillTM system is a thermal insulation system specifically designed for use on impoundment basin walls and floors. In the event of a cryogenic spill, it provides protection to underlying concrete and steel rebar from damage due to cryogenic exposure. It also reduces the rate of heat transfer into the cryogenic material from concrete and soil, limiting the rate of vaporisation.
