LNG-powered research vessel to utilise Kongsberg solution

Kongsberg has announced that it has signed a contract with German shipbuilder Fassmer for the delivery of a unique technical solution for the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) research vessel, Atair II.

The vessel will be the first government-owned, LNG-powered research vessel in the world. It will also be the first newbuild to utilise Kongsberg’s Integrated Research Vessel Concept, which the company claims will unite operational hydrographic and energy functions on board, facilitating seamless information sharing, improved efficiency and long-term lifecycle benefits.

Kongsberg’s Integrated Vessel Concept for research vessels provides a fully integrated operator environment, featuring high level acoustic data acquisition dynamic positioning, propulsion control, navigation and vessel automation. The concept provides the tools required to help meet research goals, combined with flexible, intelligent energy management and propulsion solutions. Alongside its sub suppliers, Kongsberg will provide all of the electrical systems, telecom systems, the propulsion motor, cables and installation as a full engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) contract.

Fassmer Werft will construct Atair II in Berne. Upon completion, it will be the largest vessel in BHS’ fleet, and will operate in the North Sea and Baltic Sea. It will carry out hydrographic surveys and search and rescue operations, in addition to marine environmental monitoring, and the technical testing of navigation and radar equipment. It is scheduled for delivery in 2020.
