TFN votes against proposed LNG project

The members of the Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) have voted against a proposed development of an LNG export facility on Tsawwassen Lands in British Columbia, Canada.

The proposed concept was for a facility that would produce 3 – 5 million tpy of LNG. The proposed LNG project would be situated on a 32 ha. site that has been designated for industrial use under TFN’s approved Land Use Plan.

TFN said that 74 members opposed the concept, representing 53% of votes cast.

As a consequence of this result, TFN has announced that it will not be moving forward with any additional discussion regarding this proposed LNG concept.

In addition to the LNG concept vote, the Executive Council was also seeking direction from Members for Phase 2 of TFN’s industrial land development. 79% of members who voted have provided consent for the Executive Council to negotiate leases of up to 60 years on the remaining 180 acres of land designated industrial under the TFN Land Use Plan approved in 2008.

Chief Bryce Williams, on behalf of the TFN Executive Council, said: “With today’s vote, TFN Members have made the decision that the proposed LNG concept on Tsawwassen Lands is not one they support, and therefore we will not be pursuing it any further.”
