Hyundai Heavy industries takes order worth US$ 1.1 billion
Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) announced that it has won contracts for 4 LNG carriers and 1 LNG floating storage regasification unit (FSRU). Two 162,000 m3 LNG carriers have been ordered by Golar LNG; the two other ships were ordered by an unnamed European company.
The membrane LNG carriers are due to be completed and ready for delivery some time between the Q2 of 2014 and the first half of 2015. In response to an increasing focus on environmental sustainability, the ships will be fitted with dual fuel engines, which can run either on diesel or natural gas.
The order for the 170,000 m3 LNG FSRU was placed by Hoegh. This order is scheduled for completion and delivery by Q2 2014. The advantage of FSRUs is that they cost half as much, and take up to a year less to construct.
HHI has completed 40 ships for LNG since its first LNG order in 1991.
