SEA-LNG and the Methane Abatement in Maritime Innovation Initiative (MAMII) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU). The agreement will formally launch a technical knowledge partnership, established through a MoU. The partnership formalises MAMII’s role as a technical knowledge partner within SEA-LNG’s delegation at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), bringing MAMII’s independent technical expertise and knowledge to SEA-LNG’s engagement at the IMO.
MAMII and SEA-LNG have a long-established partnership. Panos Mitrou, Chair of MAMII, has served as a Board Director and Advisor for SEA-LNG, and SEA-LNG has benefited from MAMII’s insight and knowledge. This is especially evident in demonstrating, with evidence and data, the progress, and extensive work the industry has put in to reduce methane slip.
Under the four-year agreement, MAMII will provide technical expertise on methane emissions, methane measurement methodologies and methane abatement technologies, supporting SEA-LNG’s contribution to IMO discussions and relevant technical workstreams. This is especially important following MAMII’s studies on after-treatment trials with plasma-catalytic and methane-oxidation catalysts, which showed promising early results.
SEA-LNG will also benefit from MAMII representatives joining our IMO delegation as technical experts in working groups, correspondence groups and side events, under our co-ordination.
The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to supporting the development of practical, technology-neutral and evidence-based approaches to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping.
Steve Esau, Chief Operating Officer of SEA-LNG, said: “SEA-LNG welcomes MAMII as our Technical Knowledge Partner. MAMII has built a strong reputation for bringing together industry leaders, technology developers, and maritime stakeholders to advance understanding of methane emissions and mitigation solutions. Their expertise will strengthen our technical engagement at the IMO and support our commitment to evidence-based policy discussions.”
Panos Mitrou, Chair of MAMII and Senior Vice President for Shipping Strategy at Lloyd’s Register, added: “As the industry seeks practical pathways to reduce emissions, robust technical knowledge and objective evidence are essential. Through this partnership, MAMII will contribute its expertise on methane measurement and abatement technologies to support constructive discussions at the IMO and help ensure that regulatory decisions are informed by real-world experience and technical understanding.”
