BG Group finds more gas offshore Tanzania

LNG Industry,

The British company, BG Group has announced another gas discovery at the Mzia-1 well in Block 1 offshore Tanzania. The discovery was made with Ophir Energy, which holds a 40% stake in the exploration block, whilst BG holds the remainder.

A 55 m column of gas pay was discovered in what have been described by BG as good quality Cretaceous sands, marking the company’s fifth consecutive discovery in the region.

The company said in a statement that, “Significantly, the well has de-risked a number of adjacent Cretaceous prospects, which could form part of a future Mzia hub.

“These prospects are expected to be tested in a future appraisal programme to be defined following incorporation of data from this new well and 3D seismic.

“The new resources proven by Mzia and the potential of adjacent prospects are currently under evaluation. Prior to drilling Mzia-1, BG Group had estimated mean total gross recoverable resources approaching 7 trillion ft3 of gas from the four previous discoveries drilled in Tanzania.”

A statement from Ophir, said that an additional potential reservoir interval had been detected but not intersected.
