Chart and VTG said that the cryogenic tank section of the world’s first LNG rail car prototype has been successfully manufactured and tested at Chart’s Ferox facility in Decin, Czech Republic. It is now en-route to VTG for final assembly. Chart bade farewell to the vessel earlier in October and it has now arrived at VTG’s facility in Elze, Germany, where it will be mounted on the chassis over the next few weeks. After completion, the wagon will be carried out prior to final testing.
The cryogenic LNG storage vessel is more than 24 m long and has a volume of approximately 111 m3. The vessel’s insulation properties will enable the LNG to be maintained at the initial filling temperature of approximately -161°C for up to four to six weeks without product loss through evaporation. Each railcar replaces two trucks on the road so aside from the positive environmental benefit and economic advantage of LNG, LNGonRail also results in less air pollution and less traffic jams.
