According to Reuters, the President of Tanzania, John Magufuli, has ordered officials to speed up work on the country’s long-delayed US$30 billion onshore LNG export terminal. BG Group, which was recently acquired by Shell, plans to build the terminal alongside Shell, Statoil, ExxonMobil and Ophir Energy, in partnership with Tanzania Petroleum Development Corp. (TPDC).
Although the parties are looking to complete the terminal by the early 2020s, Reuters reports that finalising issues related to land acquisition, as well the establishment of a legal framework for the nascent hydrocarbon industry, have led to a final investment decision (FID) being delayed.
Magufuli reportedly said: “I want to see this plant being built, we are taking too long. Sort out all the remaining issues so investors can start construction work immediately.”
