Bear Head LNG Corp. Inc. has announced that it has received Governor in Council approval for a license to import natural gas from the US and then export LNG from its project site for a period of 25 years. The project is located on the Strait of Canso, Richmond County, Nova Scotia, Canada. Approval was initially granted from the National Energy Board in August 2015, but this was subject to approval from the Governor in Council.
Specifically, Bear Head LNG will be allowed to import up to 14.2 billion m3/yr of natural gas. This will be enough to export up to 12 million tpy of LNG from the project.
The US Department of Energy (DOE) has already granted approval for the project to export US-sourced natural gas to nations that have free trade agreements (FTA) with the US, as well as those that don’t.
The Managing Director and CEO of LNG Ltd and President of Bear Head LNG, Greg Vesey, said: “The Government of Canada’s approval of Bear Head LNG’s natural gas import and LNG export licences is welcome news.
“The strategic importance of these approvals, as well as the regulatory certainty that it provides, distinguishes Bear Head LNG in the North American LNG marketplace. Bear Head LNG is well positioned to be a major global supplier of LNG.”
