State-run company Pertamina of Indonesia has reportedly said that it will need at least 3 million tpa of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for four terminals to meet a 6% rise in domestic demand for natural gas.
Pertamina’s Director for Gas Affairs Hari Karyuliarto was quoted by the Indonesian news agency Antara as saying that the company wanted to source the gas domestically: “We will give priority to domestic sources, although we will also keep open the option to import.”
Mr Karyuliarto said that imports would only be considered if prices were lower than at home. He added that the company receives an estimated 2 million tpa from imports.
Importing means looking to companies in Africa and the US, where Pertamina has signed a sales and purchase agreement (SPA) with Cheniere’s Corpus Christi liquefaction project in Texas for the 20-year supply of 0.8 million tpa of LNG, beginning in 2018.
