According to Reuters, the three LNG terminals on Australia’s east coast are unlikely to ever reach their peak combined operating capacity of 25.3 million tpy. It is transpiring that the region simply lacks the gas to feed them and meet domestic demand.
Queensland Curtis LNG, Australia Pacific LNG and Gladstone LNG, the three affected terminals, all source their gas from the Surat and Bowen basins in Queensland state. These fields have turned out to be significantly less productive than originally predicted.
The result of this shortfall has been that the three terminals have been operating below capacity at approximately 82% throughout 2018.
