Reuters is reporting that Western Australia’s environment authority is pushing for large scale projects to help limit global warming by offsetting their carbon emissions.
The state Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) have said that the proposed scheme would require new projects that generate in excess of 100 000 tpy of carbon dioxide to purchase credits to offset their emissions, in order to pass the authority’s assessment process.
This proposal has been met with some backlash, with some companies warning that these measures could deter investment.
The banner of ‘large scale projects’ would reportedly include fertilizer and power plants, in addition to LNG export facilities.
