LNG as a marine fuel: Crew training and competence

In this presentation ABS Group provide a practical overview of LNG marine fuel crew training and competence requirements for safe bunkering of LNG fuelled vessels. The focus is on providing vessel owners, operators and stakeholders with usable guidance for developing crew training programs and implelmenting operational procedures that reduce risk, support the safe use of LNG fuel and comply with the specific requirements of STCW and other regulatory authorities.

The presentation will examine the LNG marine fuel bunkering process, risk management, safe bunkering procedures and practical gas fuelled vessel operational safety considerations. It will also provide insight into what the actual requirements for LNG fuelled ship crews are and describe how crew competence and certification is achieved. Plus practical knowledge based on actual LNG marine fuel operations and training experience that will be of use to ship owners, vessel managers, port and terminal staff, regulatory authorities, marine safety officials, LNG suppliers, transporters and the whole range of LNG marine stakeholders.

Robert Kamb
Manager – LNG Services, ABS Group

Robert has been the Manager, LNG Services for ABS Group Consulting since January 2016 as part of the ABS Advanced Solutions team, putting his four decades of marine technical knowledge and operational experience to work on a wide variety of global LNG projects.

Prior to joining ABS, Kamb spent three decades in the US Merchant Marine, attaining the rank of Master and serving on a wide variety of ship types, including 15 years on US flag LNG Carriers, with responsibility for the care and handling of over 22 million m3 of LNG. Upon coming ashore, he founded Kamelot Marine Services, applying his LNG seagoing experience as owner’s rep and marine operations advisor to LNG FSRU projects worldwide. In 2012, he became Managing Partner of Mystic River Partners LLC, providing solutions for LNG marine projects, including shipping, safety, risk management, navigation advice, development and delivery of LNG operations and technical training with a focus on LNG as a marine fuel.

When not traveling to meet the needs of ABS Advanced Solutions clients, he divides his time between his family home in Cape Cod, Massachusetts and The Woodlands, Texas.
