Brodosplit signs contract for two LNG container vessels

Croatian company Brodosplit has signed a contract (18/10/2013) for the construction of two multipurpose container vessels that will use liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel.

The container vessels from Brodosplit shipyard will have low speed 2 stroke dual fuel (LNG/HFO) engines that have high efficiency levels and work at lower rpm, resulting in lower maintenance costs and longer life span.

The vessels will have four to five times lower cost per mile than the other ships of this class, and will emit 30 - 50 times less pollution. Thanks to more efficient consumption, investments in the 2 stroke dual fuel engines will be paid out after two to three years of exploitation.

The engines will be made by the Brodosplit diesel engine factory and will be licensed by MAN. Brodosplit will also produce special tanks of LNG that will be stored in the shipyard.

Seminal

The usage of a low-cost, environmentally friendly fuel was a key factor in the agreement. The company believes that LNG container vessels will be a more attractive option in the global shipping market than NOx, SO2 or CO2 due to impending national and international regulations.
