Second LNG carrier transits expanded Panama Canal

The Panama Canal Authority has confirmed that BP’s British Merchant is the second LNG carrier to transit the expanded Panama Canal.
The British Merchant LNG carrier, which is reported to be carrying LNG from Trinidad and Tobago to Mexico, follows the Maran Gas Apollonia in transiting the widened Canal. The Shell-chartered LNG carrier arrived at the Panama Canal from the Sabine Pass LNG terminal on the US Gulf Coast on 25 July 2016.
After the transit of the first LNG carrier through the expanded Panama Canal, Jorge L. Quijano, Panama Canal Administrator and CEO, said: "The transit of the first LNG vessel through the new Panama Canal locks is a milestone in the waterway's history […] LNG trade will greatly benefit from the expansion, and we look forward to welcoming even more LNG vessels through our great waterway. This transit marks the beginning of a new era that will result in cleaner and lower cost energy for the world."
