Bencomo Express LNG dual-fuel engine conversion ready for testing

LNG Industry,

Gainn has released a statement claiming that tests are ready to commence for the Bencomo Express’ LNG dual-fuel engine conversion project (part of the Gainn4Ship Innovation project).

The vessel’s four engines (CATERPILLAR 3618) are specially designed for high speed vessels by having a high power density. They will be converted to LNG dual-fuel, whilst maintaining the original speed and capacity. This is necessary in order for the high speed vessel to continue its current levels of service.

Before all four of the engines are retrofitted, one external engine, which has the same characteristics, has been converted to operate on dual-dual (FO CAT3618DF). This will ensure that the engines will comply with both technical and emissions regulations. Thermodynamic simulation running on dual-fuel has already been carried out in order to optimise the dual-fuel conversion kit for these particular engines. This defines consumptions and establishes the final test bench protocol that is required.

The external engine (FO CAT3618DF) is now ready to undergo testing at Navantia in Cartagena, Spain. This will follow the test bench protocol established by DNV GL.
