Australia’s first collaborative training partnership for oil and gas

The Australian petroleum industry has welcomed its first collaborative training partnership between Woodside and Chevron Australia, designed to help address the increasing demand for highly trained LNG plant operators.

The number of LNG processing plants operating in Australia is expected to increase from eight to a minimum of 21 by the end of 2018. With this upcoming rise of LNG in Australia, it was important that the industry invested in training the next wave of LNG workers to accommodate the need for skilled and knowledgeable staff.

Under the agreement established by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Western Australia (CCI), Chevron’s operator trainees will work and learn at the North West Shelf Project’s Karratha gas plant, which is operated by Woodside.

Manager of Woodside’s Karratha gas plant, Steve Trench, commented: “Supporting Chevron, by providing their trainees access to the Karratha gas plant, is evidence of Woodside’s ongoing commitment to industry collaboration towards establishing an LNG hub in Western Australia.”

Training commences

The first group of Chevron trainees began onsite training last September, working alongside Woodside trainees for a number of shifts leading up to the completion of their traineeship with Energy Apprenticeships Group. As a result, these trainees are now working for Chevron at its Gorgon and Wheatstone facilities.

Chief Executive Officer of the CCI, Deidre Willmott, said: “CCI is proud to be working with both companies to provide opportunities for workers to establish a career in the oil and gas sector.”

Chevron Australia’s Human Resources General Manager, Kaye Butler, added: “This new wave of trainees join more than 400 people who have already participated in training programmes specifically aimed at developing skills and creating job opportunities with the Gorgon and Wheatstone projects.”
