Wash water and leachate spill at Woodfibre LNG site

Woodfibre LNG has announced that a spill has occurred on the site, which is located approximately 7 km southeast of downtown Squamish, British Columbia (B.C.), Canada.

Reportedly, the spill happened during routine maintenance on the site’s industrial landfill, which contains historical wood waste from former pulp mill operations. When a pipe connecting to the landfill was flushed with water and broke, approximately 3000 litres of wash water and leachate were spilled. This was largely contained in a containment sump and then quickly cleaned using a commercial vacuum truck.

Jennifer Siddon, Senior Manager, Corporate Communications, Woodfibre LNG Ltd, said: “Fortunately, the majority of what was spilled was water […] but the spill does underscore the challenges of managing a 100-year-old industrial site.

“We take this responsibility very seriously, including our obligation to be transparent if and when incidents happen at our site.”

The incident has been reported to the BC Ministry of Environment and Emergency Management BC for further investigation, and a sample of the spilled wash water and leachate has been gathered for analysis.
